ALEF Graduates First Class and Inducts Fifth Class

The Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation (ALEF) celebrated its fourth year by producing a total of twelve new graduates at Concord University and Shepherd University.  Since one Fellow from that first class graduated last year – after only three years – ALEF’s first class has now introduced thirteen members of the next “greatest generation” of leaders for our communities, our state and our nation.

“We are introducing these young men and women to the next phase of their lives at a very challenging time.  We will need their commitment, character, and leadership to help us navigate our way forward.  They now have both the technical skills and character to provide the most valuable component of our future – leadership,”  said Robert “Doc” Foglesong, President and founder of ALEF.

As this class moves to their new challenges, the next class of ALEF Fellows has been selected.  Eight new Fellows have been identified and inducted into ALEF.  These new Fellows were selected based on their academic agility, demonstrated leadership in their schools and communities, and financial need.  These eight Fellows come from seven different communities across West Virginia.  Their composite grade point average in high school was 3.97.  The average ACT score was 25.

Foglesong said, “We have a state full of outstanding young men and women who are smart, articulate, and motivated to do something important in their lives, but lack the funds to continue their educations.  We have, once again, found eight of those young men and women who will benefit from our leadership programs and our financial support.  They are an incredible group of potential leaders.”
