ALEF Selects Its Fourth Class of Fellows
The Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation (ALEF) has completed its selection process for the 2009 ALEF Delta Class. This is the fourth year that ALEF has put together a group of young men and women from West Virginia who have extraordinary leadership, academic, and social skills and who have great potential to be the leaders in our communities, in government, and in our businesses. Each new Fellow exhibited the core values ALEF espouses – integrity, excellence, and service.

Erin Asbury
Concord
University
Erin Asbury lives in Lewisburg, WV and graduated from Greenbrier East High School. She is majoring in biology at Concord University to capitalize on the exceptional academic record she established in high school. While in high school, Erin was a member of the National Honor Society, student government, various athletic teams, and participated in numerous community activities. She was selected to attend Mountaineer Girls State and was the team captain for the high school volleyball team.
Gabrielle Aysem Bartlet
Shepherd University
Gabrielle Aysem Bartlett lives in New Creek, WV and graduated from Keyser High School. In high school, she participated in sports, student government, was a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions and the Arts and Cultural Enrichment Society, and was exceptionally active in community volunteer activities to include Special Olympics, the American Diabetes Association, and the Women’s Ministry Mission. Gabrielle is attending Shepherd University and majoring in biology.
Thomas Edward Bland
Concord University
Thomas Edward Bland comes from Pineville, WV and graduated from Wyoming County East High School. He attends Concord University and majors in pre-law/history. This young man has an extraordinary academic record and participated in numerous extracurrular activities in high school. He hopes to enter politics in West Virginia after graduating and working with a law firm.
Melva Mounts-Blankenship
Concord University
Melva Mounts-Blankenship graduated from Gilbert High School and was raised in Gilbert, WV. She is majoring in biology/pre-medicine while attending Concord University. In addition to a superb academic record, she participated in many high school activities to include the marching band, the concert band, and the National Honor Society. Melva has been a steady volunteer in community activities. She is also the first person in her family to attend college.
Case Boland
Concord University
Casey Boland is from Shady Spring, WV and attended the Greater Beckley Christian School. He is attending Concord University and is leaning toward majoring in accounting. Casey, like his ALEF classmates, had extraordinary grades in high school. He was active across many different functions in both high school and the community. Casey won numerous academic awards while in high school.
Miranda Daniel
Concord University
Miranda Daniel is from Beckley, WV and attended Liberty High School. She attends Concord University and majors in pre-medicine. Miranda participated in numerous high school activities to include cross country where she was team captain, the school yearbook where she was editor, student council, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Her high school record is full of awards and honors.
Jarrod Brett Dotson
Concord University
Jarrod Brett Dotson graduated from Gilbert High School and was raised in Gilbert, WV. He was very active in anything that was musical while in high school, was on the debate team, the yearbook staff, and won numerous awards for his musical skills. Brett spent many hours doing volunteer work in and around Mingo county. He attends Concord University and hopes to return to a high school in West Virginia and run the music department.
Joseph Andrew Hansroth
Shepherd University
Joseph Andrew Hansroth is from Berkeley Springs, WV and graduated from Berkeley Springs High School. He is attending Shepherd University and majoring in biology/pre-med and has been conditionally accepted at WVU into the medical program. Joe was captain of the football team, editor of the yearbook, and a member of the National Honor Society. He was president of the senior class.
Randal Ellis Johnson
Concord University
Randall Ellis Johnson is from Mullens, WV and graduated from Wyoming East High School. He is attending Concord University and is majoring in biology. While in high school, Randy was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, the baseball team, the football team, was captain of the tennis team and a member of Hi-Y. He had numerous honors and award while in high school.
Randal Corey Kennedy
Concord University
Randall Corey Kennedy is from Brenton, WV and attended Westside High School. Corey is attending Concord University and is majoring in biology/pre-med. While in high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society, president of several classes, a member of the student council, on the baseball team, and a member of Hi-Y. Corey was very active in community and volunteer activities and accrued numerous honors and awards.
Paul Isaac Picklesimer
Marshall University
Paul Isaac Picklesimer is from Williamson, WV. He is attending Marshall University and is majoring in civil engineering and geology. While in high school, Isaac was president of the National Honor Society, attended Mountaineer Boy’s State, was the editor of the yearbook, and was on the track and golf teams. He committed to many community activities to include the WV Civic Literacy Council, the WV Youth Action Council, and the Special Olympics. Isaac had numerous awards and honors while in high school.
Amber Stenson
Shepherd University
Amber Stenson is from Martinsburg, WV and attended Hedgesville High School. While in high school, Amber was very active in sports and was a member of the basketball team, and track and field. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletics. Amber received numerous academic awards. She is attending Shepherd University and majoring in elementary education.
Brokeann Stenson
Shepherd University
Brokeann Stenson is from Martinsburg, WV and attended Hedgesville High School. She is the twin sister of Amber. Brooke is attending Shepherd University and, like her sister, will major in elementary education. While in high school, she was active in sports and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletics. Brooke was active in community service and received numerous awards.
